Transport to the fore

The focus in the last few weeks has been very much on transport, with the Eddington Review, the National Transport Strategy in Scotland, the announcement of the draft orders for the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route and now the launch of Nestrans Regional Transport Strategy for North East Scotland.

The announcement on the Aberdeen Western Peripheral route follows on from its incorporation within the National Transport Strategy so now, hopefully, we can expect it to head towards the target opening date of 2011. It may be late, but better late than never as they say.

The NESTRANS Regional Transport Strategy for North East Scotland sets out NESTRANS aspirations for the next stage of implementing the Modern Transport System. It includes reference to the long-awaited Aberdeen Crossrail which aims to have trains running every 30 minutes from Stonehaven through to Inverurie, with a new station at Kintore estimated to open in 2009.

The report does seem to present a reasonably balanced approach that recognises the importance of road transport, while providing enhanced public transport. It remains to be seen how it will be implemented.

A consultation is available on the site with a deadline for comments of February 7, 2007.
