Aberdeen special needs' workshop nominated for top UK food award

Well done to all the lads and lassies at Newton Dee Bakery which has been nominated for Local Hero 2007 in celebrity chef Gary Rhodes' UKTV award scheme.

The winning
Local Hero 2007 award winners will go on to feature in a UKTV series and will also win £40,000 to invest in their business.

The Newton Dee Bakery is part of the
Newton Dee Village, one of six Camphill communities in the Aberdeen area. Newton Dee is home to around 200 people, around half of whom are adults with special needs.

The bakery is just one of a number of work opportunities within the community - the others are the excellent cafe at Newton Dee (drop in for a coffee and home bakes or soup and bread it is a real experience!), the food store, woodwork workshops, metal work, toy workshops, two farms and even an architects' practice.

Newton Dee is a really magical place with a fantastic supportive atmosphere and a real community feeling. What a fantastic boost it would be to the lads and lassies to win do well in this award scheme.

If you haven't been there before, go out to Newton Dee Bakery and buy some loaves, pizzas, cakes or biscuits. After you've eaten them you will definitely want to vote for them! Voting closes on August 20.
